By being aggressive early, you can force other players to call a bet before they have a chance to think about it and fold their weaker hands. This can be a great way to win large amounts of money, and will help you build up your bankroll faster.
A flop can kill you
When you are dealing the cards, it is important to understand how the flop will improve your hand. If you have a king and another player has a queen, the flop will improve your king to an Ace. This can be a very good hand, but it will also do you no good if someone else has a pair of queens.
A flop is very easy to get wrong, and this can make you lose. For example, you might be holding an A-K, but the flop comes up J-J-5. If the other person has a K, they will have the highest pair and you will be dead in the water.
Check-raising is a common tactic in poker, and it’s a very effective way to get other players to fold their weaker hands. It’s worth noting, however, that it is also possible for you to sandbag (bet too low) without losing any money.
Usually, you should check your hand after the flop and let other players decide how to act. This can be done by betting small and letting them see how well they hold their hands, or by making a large bet and hoping that other players will fold. This is known as a ‘check-raise’ and it’s an excellent strategy for beginners to learn.
